Services Offered

The University of Minnesota Plant Disease Clinic is able to accept out of state samples.

Routine Diagnosis, $37

We provide routine diagnosis of samples that require traditional methods of symptom analysis, culturing, or microscopic examination. These include leaf spot and root rot diseases of trees, field crops, and greenhouse crops. Fees may vary if additional specialized media is required.

Nematode Analysis, $20

Identification and count of plant parasitic nematodes for all commercial crops

Note: Samples specifically for soybean cyst egg counts should be sent directly to the Nematology Lab, Southern Research and Outreach Center, 35838 120th St., Waseca, MN, 56093.

Virus Analysis

ELISA and other serological virus tests are available. Fees vary depending on the test ($37.00 minimum, discount apply for 2+ samples, ELISA only).


Oak Wilt and Dutch Elm Disease, $45

Turf Disease Diagnosis, $45


Seed Quality Testing, (Fees vary depending on the test).

  • Soybean: Phomopsis pod test
  • Corn and Grain: Identification of storage molds
  • Dilution of planting of feed/silage for storage molds
Verticillium sp. Testing
  • Soil assay on potato and nursery crop soils, $45
  • Culture of plant tissue, $37

Molecular Diagnostics (DNA and RNA based assays and DNA sequencing). Please contact the Clinic for specific information and fees.

Aphanomyces sp. Testing
This is a biological assay on sugarbeet soil for the presence of Aphanomyces sp. Soil samples should be collected after harvest and will be processed in the greenhouse during the winter months. Contact the Plant Disease Clinic for specific information. For information on Aphanomyces testing on alfalfa and peas, please contact the clinic.
